features 14 powerful and inspirational chants for healing and prosperity. They
are considered by Buddhist Masters to be daily essentials for creating goodness
and success. Performed by the chant master of the Tibetan Sed-Gyued Tantric
Monastery, these sacred prayers have filled the Buddhist temples of the
Himalayas for over 2000 years. Proceeds from CD sales benefit the Segyu

Sacred
Chants from a Tibetan Chant Master
The
ancient chanting traditions of Tibetan Buddhism have had myriad practitioners
throughout the Himalayas, with various Buddhist monasteries cultivating their
own styles and masters. Since the occupation of Tibet by China, of course,
many monastic orders emigrated to Nepal and India, taking their sacred
chanting practices with them. The Venerable Gen Palden Temphel, a senior monk
in the exiled Sed-Gyued Datsang Tantric monasteries, traveled to Northern
California to record the 14 traditional chants on this captivating CD.
Ranging from invocations of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to bless and protect
our surrounding, to requests for inspiration and prayers to the Medicine
Buddha and the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, the emotional and spiritual power of
the chants reach noninitiates through the throaty vocal timbres of the monk
and his attendant. Unlike the intricate chiorlike ensemble interplay and
grand, concert-style presentation of the Gyuto monks, these intimate duets
have more rough-hewn feel. Their visceral immediacy is enhanced by the close
placement of microphones and audiophile quality production, which capture not
only the vibrations of bass-range guttural tones and the whistling harmonics
resonating in the chanter's heads, but inhalations, coughs, and
throat-clearing as well. But, while undeniably earthy, the two deep gravelly
voices can also fill the room with a sense of well-being, rising and falling
like swells on a tranquil ocean. The final, 30-second "Secret Chanting
Sounds" end with a brief chuckle, reaffirming the very human appeal of
this sacred enterprise.
