Young Seeds of Virtue
On Sunday November 12, 2000, the Healing Buddha Foundation hosted its second Jewel Heart Kid's Club.
Fourteen children from all over the San Francisco Bay Area gathered together to learn about the
importance of practicing virtue and serving others.
We were very honored that Ven. Segyu Rinpoche, our Head Lama, joined in to teach the children
how to meditate and chant the compassion mantra OM MANI PADME HUM. Segyu Rinpoche challenged the
children to meditate silently, to meditate on the mantra without break, and to identify differences
in the various tunes used to chant the mantra.
A major part of the Kid's Club is the community service project. In our first Kid's Club
gathering last summer, the children put together 100 brown bag lunches for the Redwood Empire Food Bank
of Santa Rosa. This time, the kids tried their hands at baking cookies for the
Sebastopol Senior Center. They decorated the cookies beautifully with colored sprinkles and
packed them into little white bags covered with kind messages and magnificent drawings.
At the end of the day, Ven. Segyu Rinpoche gathered the children together around the cookies
and chanted the compassion mantra over their offering, sending prayers to those who would receive them.
The Jewel Heart Kids Club meets four times a year. We are currently collecting ideas for our
community service project in the coming spring. Please let us know if you have any fun
activities that will benefit our community.
